This week at Gilmer County Ele, Feb 28 thru Mar 4, is Read Across America Week! In honor of one of our favorite authors, we will have a Dr. Seuss-themed Spirit Week to celebrate reading! Each day will coordinate with one of our favorite Dr. Seuss books. Please see the flyer to help the kiddos find their gear!
Tues, Mar 1- Read Aloud Day
Wed, Mar 2-"Birthday Bingo" w/ a special treat (Dr. Seuss' 118th Birthday)
Thurs, Mar 3- MENU CHANGE: Green Eggs & Ham, Hashbrowns, Biscuit and Applesauce/Dr. Seuss books go home for students to add to their personal library for keeps.

A few bits of information for this week at GCES.
This Thursday, 2/17/22, we will host the Barn Hill Preserve, where students will get to see and learn about exotic animals in person during a school assembly. Permission forms are required for students to attend, and if you need another one sent home with your child, please contact the school at (304)462-7338.
A reminder that there is no school for students this Friday, 2/18/22, and next Monday, 2/21/22. Next Monday is a Professional Learning Day for Gilmer County Schools, so staff will report for professional development, and students will have some work to do at home. This counts as one of our required instructional days in our calendar.

The 4th and 5th grade GCES basketball tournament has been rescheduled to Thursday, February 10th. It will be an exciting evening of basketball, come help us make some noise for the GCES Wildcats!

Due to dangerous road conditions, the GCES basketball tournament has been postponed. Details on make-up games will follow.

Attention 4th and 5th grade basketball families. Our end of season tournament will take place this Saturday, February 5th, 2022. The schedule of games is as follows:
9:00am: Game 1- (2) Gray vs (3) Royal Blue
10:00am: Game 2- (1) Black vs (4) Light Blue
11:00-12:00-BREAK and free throw competition.
12:00pm: Championship Game: Winner of game 1 vs Winner of game 2
2nd and 3rd grade basketball families; on Thursday, February 3, 2022, our 2nd and 3rd grade basketball players will have their last practice and will play their exhibition game from 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm. Come out and support the kids and enjoy an evening of fun!

Be sure to check out the Gilmer County Schools app if you have not already. It is a great way to make sure you are up to date with school events.
Also, please note that if we are experience another school cancelation, Gilmer County Schools will announce an NTID, or Non-Traditional School Day. If this happens, students will need to complete the NTID that is announced. These are in the form of packets, and were sent home with students during the first week of January. Please contact the school if your child did not receive their NTID packet.

All Gilmer County Schools will be operating on a two-hour delay for Friday, January 21. Please keep an eye out for text messages, county website, news broadcasts, and the state WV School Closings site for further information.

Attention 2nd and 3rd Grade Elementary Basketball Families
As a reminder, starting the week of November 15-19, 2nd and 3rd Grade Students will practice on Thursdays from 6:30-7:30pm and on Fridays from 5:00-6:00pm. All paperwork information will need to be received by Gilmer County Elementary prior to practice. There will be no practice on holidays or days that school is closed due to weather. Good morning! We are excited to share that GCES students have been invited to attend an early Christmas concert at Glenville State College. The concert will take place tomorrow morning, 11/16/2021. Our busses will leave here at 8:40AM. A permission form will be coming home with students today. Please note that this form only needs to be signed and returned if your child is NOT permitted to go on the trip to Glenville State College. You may also convey this by contacting GCES office staff at (304)462-7338.

Due to unforeseen circumstances, 4th and 5th grade basketball practices have been changed from November 1st to November 8th from 5 to 7 p.m.

Gilmer County School District is actively seeking substitute teachers. These positions are vital to the consistent operation of our schools, and offer a flexible work schedule. For more information, please see the attached advertisement.


We have decided to make our Birth Start on Friday, October 22nd, a Drive-Thru event. Preschool staff will give pumpkin-themed materials to families who choose to drive through the GCES Bus Loop. Partners who want to come and join us outside and share materials are welcome to join us! Please see the flyer for additional details.

Parents of GCES students in grades 2nd through 5th: Your child should be coming home with a form asking if they are interested in playing elementary basketball. It is important that we receive this form by no later than September 30th if your child will be playing. These forms are important so that we know how many teams we will have, and who to provide the enrollment forms to. If you have questions please contact the school. Go Wildcats!

Come join us at GCES on October 14th from 4:30 to 7:30 for our first annual Boo Bash! Students will receive 5 free tickets, and we have lots of fun activities planned for kids! Additional tickets are $1, proceeds will benefit the Gilmer County Elementary School PTO.
