GCS staff participated in this morning's inaugural session for the 2023-2024 academic year. Superintendent Dr. Minney delivered remarks that showcased his enthusiasm for the upcoming school year and illustrated the new county mission statement: Empower, Inspire, Engage. Principals Tyson Price and Brandon Payne introduced new staff members and shared their excitement for students to return to school next Thursday. The highlight of the event was an inspiring presentation delivered by Rodney Robinson, the distinguished recipient of the 2019 National Teacher of the Year award. Mr. Robinson took the audience through an inspiring narrative, detailing the transformational odyssey of the Virgie Binford Education Center – a journey that elevated it from closure to attaining the esteemed status of the top educational institution in the entire state. During his address, Mr. Robinson underscored the pivotal role of forging meaningful connections, embracing the principles of restorative justice, and diligently catering to the diverse needs of students. These pillars, he stressed, are instrumental in cultivating an environment that inherently fosters favorable educational outcomes and nurtures a culture of positive learning. We would like to thank our generous donors and community partners who made the staff breakfast possible: Collins Insurance Mama's Brick Oven Par Mar McDonald's Glenville Foodland Our teachers and staff are inspired and motivated to have a strong start to the school year! #GoGilmer

From the Nurse's Office: We kindly remind our 7th and 12th grade students and parents that up-to-date immunizations are a prerequisite prior to the commencement of the school term. For our Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten students and families, please ensure that age-appropriate vaccines are fully administered before the start of the school year. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated as we prioritize the health and well-being of our students!

We were so excited when Salem University Water Polo coach and athletic trainer made a visit to teach about the sport. Also, Principal, Mr. Price, is an avid cyclist and demonstrated the many facets of cycling to our campers. A big "SHOUT OUT" to Salem University's Polo crew and Mr. Price!

🤩SummerBoost Fun🤩 On Friday, June 30th, campers enjoyed another Fantastic Friday! The morning began with a trip to Glenville State University. Campers toured the campus and also learned about the international students who attend the university. The day didn't end there. Next, campers stopped by the Gilmer Public Library and participated in a craft, a read-aloud, and relay games. Campers were even able to launch water balloons at Miss Monica. A big THANK YOU to both GSU and Gilmer County Public Library for hosting and creating a memory the campers won't forget. Go Gilmer!!

Gilmer SummerBoost had special guests join us on Thursday, June 22nd during the morning academic rotations. These were folks from the National office of Save the Children and the WV state office of Save the Children. They were very pleased with the "fabulous" work that they saw in the SummerBoost program. While visiting, they also discussed other Save the Children programs in Gilmer County, including Early Steps, KinderBoost, Afterschool and the Mobile Feeding Unit. We were really excited and proud to receive national attention on the great work our staff and students are doing in Gilmer County.
