April Jenkis

Gilmer County Elementary School is proud to announce April Jenkins as our 2024-2025 Service Personnel of the Year. April is known throughout our school not only for her incredible cooking, but for the kindness and joy she brings to everyone she meets—students and staff alike. Her cheerful spirit, warm heart, and contagious smile make her a daily bright spot in our building.

April began her journey in service 11 years ago as a substitute cook and janitor. She earned her full-time position as a cook in December 2015 at Gilmer County High School and later moved to GCES when the new building opened. “I came to be closer to and watch over my daughters,” she shared, “and ended up falling in love with the job.”

When asked what led her to this career path, April said it best: “My immense love for cooking and children and making children smile.” And smile they do!! Whether it's because of her famous meals or her sunny personality that lifts everyone around her.

Being named Service Personnel of the Year was a meaningful moment for April. “It felt absolutely phenomenal. I got cold chills and it brought tears to my eyes. It gave me the ‘I made it’ feeling; seeing that how I present myself and my efforts makes a difference to my students and fellow co-workers.”

When reflecting on what she loves most, April said, “Getting to see the kids smile and hearing what the kids have to say about my good cooking!”

April’s dedication, heart, and happiness are truly felt throughout GCES. We are so grateful to have her as part of our school family. April will now go on to represent Gilmer County Elementary and compete for the Service Personnel of the Year for Gilmer County Schools. Congratulations, April!
