GLENVILLE, West Virginia, December 12, 2023 — Gilmer County Schools are thrilled to announce that the district has been awarded a substantial grant to finance the procuring and installation of a new walk-in freezer and cooler. On December 11, the School Building Authority of West Virginia presented awards totaling over $111 million to the boards of education for 19 different counties. The Gilmer County Board of Education received $724,693 for the project and committed $80,000 of local funds to go towards the effort.
Governor Jim Justice, in a ceremony on Monday, personally handed over a check to the representatives of the county boards, demonstrating the state’s commitment to improving school infrastructure and facilities. Superintendent Minney was on site to accept the award.
The ambitious project involves the replacement of the existing walk-in cooler and freezer, relocating it to the back of the cafeteria area. The current walk-in cooler, positioned on a concrete pad, has experienced structural issues due to soil erosion, causing it to separate from the building structure. The current walk-in freezer is only accessible from outside of the building, which necessitated additional security measures to prevent theft or unauthorized access. Additionally, the freezer suffers from a number of mechanical issues that require costly and time-intensive repairs to prevent mechanical failure.
Beyond the structural improvements, the project is designed to enhance access to the walk-in cooler facilities, which will ensure safe and healthy storage of food for GCHS students. Furthermore, the new facilities align with ongoing efforts to promote the sourcing, processing, and preparation of locally grown and raised produce. These initiatives seek to support the local agricultural community as well as guarantee student access to fresh, nutritious, and sustainably sourced food options.
